Template Help and Support...

We are always available to our clients for template support. This does not mean unfortunately we can teach you FrontPage if you don't already know how to use it. We can say that the learning curve for FrontPage is relatively low, and most people catch on very quickly.

If you are looking for help figuring out the Handbook click on over to the James Martell Support Desk for support questions answered.

This section will soon be migrated over to our Tips and Tirades blog...

This section has been set up with the specific needs of Affiliate Marketing students in mind and covers the basics of using one of our templates for your affiliate marketing project. We also have a large help Center at our main site that you can find some valuable FrontPage information should you run into problems.

Please Note: While our templates can easily be converted to be used in any HTML Editor, FrontPage is our editor of choice and we can only support sites developed in FrontPage.  We will do our best to help you out where we can if you use another editor, but FrontPage is our area of expertise and we do not specialize in other editors. We recommend that if you will be using another editor you have some basic knowledge of the program before you start.

We have developed The Affiliate Website Development Manual with step by step tutorials to guide you through the template development process, it is highly recommended you order it if this is the first time you are using one of our new templates, or if this is the first time you are building a website with FrontPage.

Installing your template

Because of changes to the FrontPage 2003 installation files, as of May 2003 we will no longer be using the "FrontPage Installation" programming. We have instead decided to use a simple extract to place the files on your computer. Once you have downloaded the files, do the following:

Unzip your downloads

the base template...

  1. Unzip the base template files you received from us.
  2. In the unzipped folder you will see your folders and other additional files.
  3. These folders are webs...you will work directly with these folders.

Copy and Paste

  1. Make a copy of the folder you will be working with and paste it into your My Documents/ My Webs folder.
  2. Right Click and Rename the folder to suit your site.

the style sheet...

  1. Unzip the style sheet files you received from us. (it will look something like t02-c10.zip...depending on which layout design/colour you chose)
  2. In the unzipped folder you will see a file called style.css.
  3. this is your style sheet.

Copy and Paste

  1. Right click on the file and choose copy then go to your new web you created above and right click again and choose paste.
  2. This will apply the style to your base template.

the header...

  1. Unzip the header files you received from us. (it will look something like h02-c10.zip or p01-automotive.zip...depending on which header you chose)
  2. In the unzipped folder you will see your new header file.

Editing a Graphic with Paint Shop Pro 8 or 9

This tutorials explains how you can add text to any blank button or graphic image using our favorite Imaging Program - Paint Shop Pro 8 or 9.

While the tutorial is based on changing the "Your Name Here" image or logo...you can use the same principals to add text to any image...

Opening and Editing your Template in FrontPage

Once you have extracted your template package as shown above, you can then move or copy your folder to the My Documents/My webs folder. Opening and editing is quick and easy from here.
  1. Make sure you have made a back up of your original folder.
  2. Open the folder and right click on a page, we usually start with the info.htm page.
  3. Choose Edit.
  4. As long as FrontPage is your default editor FrontPage will open and your new template will be ready to edit.

You can also open the web via FrontPage...

  1. Open FrontPage.
  2. Click File Open Web.
  3. Browse to your new web template in the My Documents/My Webs folder.
  4. And open the page.

Copy and paste your content (do's & don'ts)

Though somewhere in the James Martell Handbook it says to compile your content in Microsoft Word and then paste it into your template...please disregard this...in fact pretend like you never read it. Not doing so will cause you all kinds of headaches...

Type you content directly into FrontPage at all times...if you must compile your content outside of FrontPage use NotePad to do so. If you are having your articles authored by someone else, copy the content into Notepad or WordPad before you paste it into FrontPage to remove any nasty formatting.

Creating New Pages

FP 2000/2002 Using the Save As function to create a new page

The fastest way to create pages on the fly is to use the Save As function in FrontPage. This technique is especially good for templates that have more that one layout page.

  1. Open a page in your web with a layout that will suit what you need the page for.

  2. Click File > Save As.

  3. In the dialogue box at the Page Title area click the Change Button. And Change the Name to Suit.

  4. In the File name box type in the new file name with no spaces and be sure to leave the .htm intact.

  5. Now click save.

  6. Your new page will appear in the folder list.

FP2003 Using The "From Existing Page"

  1. Click File > New

  2. A panel will open to the right.

  3. Under the New page heading, choose From existing page...

  4. A dialogue window will open.

  5. browse to the page you want to use as a template and click on it.

  6. Now click save, and name the page and file name, keeping the .htm extension intact.

  7. Your new page will appear in the folder list.

Basic edits

The bookmark js code

  • double click on the bookmark.js file or right click on it and open with NotePad.

  • change the following 2 variables to suit your site:

bookmarkurl="http://your-site.com"
bookmarktitle="Your Site Name"

the variables will appear something like those above when you open the page...

  • save the js page

Using the Include Pages

  • We have included several include pages with this template.

  • The instructions for editing the information on them is the same for all.

  • Open the include folder and choose the include you wish to change. For example: Open the ad-box.htm page and add your google adsence code. Save the page, and then go to one of your pages. You should see the google adsence included on all your pages.

What to do on the other include pages...

bookmark-this-site.htm - this is where the bookmark code is found, you don't need to do anything to this page.

footer.htm - change your copyright information here.

header.htm - change your logo on this page. You will need some sort of graphics program to edit the blank image included with the template. We recommend Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 or 9, and have a tutorial at out main help centre.

menu.htm - this is where you place your main navigation links, these links are most commonly found on the left column of the page.

menu2.htm - this is where you place your second navigation links, these links are most commonly found at the bottom of the page.

resources.htm - this is where you will find your site resource information. It is also where the pop up configuration is for your pop up pages. You can change the wording, but be careful of the links as they may contain specific code.

static-ads.htm - if you wish to add some additional content to several pages, you can use this include. To add it to a page, place your curser where you want it, and click Insert>Include Page. You can then browse to the page found in your include folder.*2003 users click Insert>Web Component and then choose Include Content>Page, now browse to the page.

site-design.htm - this page should be left alone...you may choose to remove the hyperlink...but the text must remain as part of the license agreement. Contact for more information

Deleting an include from a page...

If you do not wish to use an include on one of your pages, just place your curser on the section you don't want to have, click once, and then right click and then click your Delete key once.

Moving an include to another part of the page...

If you want to place an include section in another location on the page you just need to click on it once then right click and choose Cut...now place your curser where you want the section to appear and right click again and then choose paste...don't forget to save the page.

Inserting Advertisers Links

Some People have been having trouble with inserting the advertisers links they get from Commission Junction. So I thought a quick note about this was in order. Instructions for FrontPage 2002-2003

When you receive your link from commission junction it will look something like this:

<a href="http://www.qksrv.net/click-1517239-5527324" target="_blank" onmouseover="window.status='http://www.indextools.com/?ref=cj';return true;" onmouseout="window.status=' ';return true;">IndexTools.com</a><img src="http://www.qksrv.net/image-1517239-5527324" width="1" height="1" border="0">

Most people have been using the HTML Markup box to insert the link...this is causing problems...Doing it this way will add a webbot to the link and then hide it in Design or Normal view...

So here is what you want to do to insert it...

  1. Copy the code from Commission Junction.
  2. Place your curser where you want the link to appear on your page.
  3. Right click and choose Paste
  4. You are going to see something like this:
  5. Near the bottom of the code you will see a little icon (see the red square above).
  6. Click on it and choose "Treat as HTML Tags"
  7. That is it...you link is done.
